What makes us different
The professional landscape is already served by a range of well-established chartered bodies — the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Chartered Management Institute, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Chartered Institute of Public Relations, and the Public Relations and Communications Association, among others. Each occupies a defined functional or discipline-specific space.
IoPD does not seek to replicate or compete with these bodies. Instead, it occupies a fundamentally different position: a cross-professional institute focused not on what professionals do, but on how they develop capability responsibly over time — across roles, sectors, and career stages.
This distinction is not merely semantic. It reflects a genuine and unmet need in the professional development ecosystem — one that existing bodies, by design, are not structured to fill.
IoPD Is…
A cross-professional, values-led body
An independent quality assurance authority
A champion of ethical, inclusive development
A home for lifelong professional growth
IoPD Is Not…
A functional or discipline-specific institute
A qualification-awarding body
A replication of chartered body models
A sector-bound membership organisation

Our Vision
To become the leading authority within the field of professional development and in so doing engage learners, industry and researchers with integrity and a progressive mindset, advancing organisational effectiveness.
Our Mission
Our mission is to empower individuals and organisations to be more productive, inclusive and resilient by developing effective professional skills, which are drawn from innovative evidence-based and applied research.

Anchored in Global Frameworks for Responsible Practice
IoPD explicitly aligns with internationally recognised frameworks — most notably the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) — not as a symbolic gesture, but as a practical anchor for governance, curriculum assurance, and professional conduct.
This alignment provides IoPD with a rigorous, externally validated foundation upon which its standards can be assessed, its kitemarking decisions justified, and its membership criteria credibly defended to employers, learning providers, and regulators alike. It signals to the global professional community that IoPD’s commitments are serious, measurable, and internationally coherent.
Governance
Framework principles inform board accountability and decision-making structures.
Curriculum Assurance
Global benchmarks guide quality assessment of learning programmes seeking IoPD recognition.
Professional Conduct
Member obligations are grounded in internationally established standards of ethical practice.
